Coronation Double Century 2014.

This year I was asked to ride as a guest rider for Team Giant for the Double Century.
This annual event is for all riders be it for fun or racing its a great day out.

The team tactic was to set a blistering pace until water point 1 with the team individuals giving equal amount of pace making on the front,
except for the downhill sections where a shorter faster pull was done to keep the momentum up. This Tactic played off giving
us the win and a record time of 5:02:28, it was a bitter sweet victory as Hannes the team manager has been hunting a Sub 5 hour DC.
Next year if the conditions are similar and the squad stronger I’m sure we will break 5 hours.

Well done to the team and management you guys were super!

Western Province Championships 23 March 2014 176km.

Lining up for this race I was super confident and decided to gamble by going in the early break away which formed 3 km from the start, 3 of us managed to work well together and grew a gap of 2m30 on the bunch, which from reports was getting smaller and smaller with every rolling hill and cross wind.

We at the front pushed on sharing the pace making keeping our speed constant, On the start of the 3rd lap I shelled my two break away partners not purposefully knowing that there was not a huge time buffer between myself and the peleton more legs makes the head winds easier…

5km later and 40km togo James from Team Ride Life Giant and Nic from Euro Car had joined me upfront.
Gritting my teeth with salt crystals all over my face I was paying for my early efforts.

“De Meur” or Paardeberg climb takes no prisoners with James Tennent looking the strongest I knew as we hit this climb he will test Nic and myself.
As we crested the climb James accelerated with his team car shouting in fury to put the hammer down he got a 10 second gap on us. I paced hard to close him down with Nic on my wheel not willing to pace. I slowed up briefly to force Nic to pace putting me in the slip briefly to catch my breath as soon as he flicked his elbow to signal for me to come through I attacked and rode across to James.

The finale, James attacked on the final hill again getting about 10 seconds on me I clawed back to 4 seconds and had to settle for a Silver Medal.

Final results Elite Men.
1st. James Tennet – Giant
2nd. Raymond Cox – CWC Fondriest
3rd. CLint Hendriks – Bonitas Cycling

RACE REPORT – Race 1 2014 / Tour Of Philly

A short 90km of rolling hills was the course today.

Conditions: A mild 20 degrees C and a small breeze was present.

From the start there were attacks and riders trying to get away but no break was working due to the fact I think no one committed 110% to any break, then a brave move went off the front a solo effort from Ed Greene a experienced rider that raced in France for 2013 it looked promising.

45 km Half way, The peleton reeled Ed in just before the Paardeberg Circuit Climb the only real chance for a climber to disrupt the bunch was coming up on Paardeberg we hit the biggest roller of the day and the bunch was strung out over the top and Stefan attacked with Theuns Van Der Bank, David Garret, James Reid. Myself and Emile Jacobs bridging across to the split.

We managed to stick it out in front for about 20 odd km before the bunch got organized and caught us.

Still feeling fresh the waiting game started with the finale to the finish you could launch a brutal attack  for the win. Then unexpectedly the Race comm called off the race and DQ’D the whole bunch 12km togo due to riders not following the center line ruling…

Until next time………
